Where Cuenca Begins to Wander

Tucked on the eastern edge of Cuenca’s historic center, Cruz del Vado is more than a landmark — it is a silent storyteller. Marking the oldest neighborhood in the city, this emblematic cross once signaled the end of Cuenca’s colonial limits and the beginning of the unknown. It was here that merchants, poets, and travelers crossed over, venturing into the countryside or arriving to settle, trade, or dream.

The name itself holds a clue to its role: vadear — to ford — was the word used for crossing the Tomebamba River at this very point. Before bridges stood, this was the passage. The stone cross that crowns the corner was placed as both a spiritual blessing and a marker of protection. Some say it was built to ward off wandering spirits said to drift along the riverside — spirits of those who never returned from their journey beyond the ford.

Today, the charm of Cruz del Vado lives in the details: iron balconies carved with initials lost to time, pastel façades weathered by decades of sun and rain, and small artisan shops that still echo with craft and tradition. The neighborhood flows seamlessly from art to memory, where every corner whispers a story and every window reveals a scene in motion.

Stand by the stone balustrade and watch the Tomebamba run, the same waters that once determined the rhythm of life in this city. And in that stillness, you feel it: Cuenca begins here, not with fanfare, but with footsteps. Cruz del Vado represents the city’s cultural soul stretching between what was and what’s to come.
