Ecuador & Galápagos

Indigenas

Pleated or flat skirt? Embroidered blouse? Tall crown and short brimmed hat? The traditional dress of indigenous tribes does not follow fashion trends; it is one of the holdouts of humans’ cultural adaptations over the years. It is a source and product of the indiginous peoples’ handicraft, artistry and differentiation. Vibrant, handwoven textiles, stacks and stacks of hats, alpargata shoes, golden necklaces and warm ponchos are all part and parcel of daily work and life. Every garment has different characteristics allowing the knowledgeable to identify which of the 14 coexisting tribes in Ecuador each person belongs to. Additionally music, gastronomy and decorative craftwork are all fortitudes of Ecuador’s indigenous peoples. Spend an unforgettable moment in the company of these great hosts and get acquainted with their cosmovision.

Colonial Ecuador

Leap back in time into Colonial Latin America, traipse along columned corridors into skylit central patios and out onto romantic balconies. Devout or not, hail the marvelous architecture and beauty of the churches, cathedrals and convents exhibiting various periods of art within the historic centers of Quito and Cuenca. Watch the curtain rise in theatres graced by famous orchestras, plays and dramatized folklore. Theatrized expositions and walking tours bring to life past protagonists biographical, legendary or mythical. Take part in the living history of the best preserved colonial centers whose residents fiercely protect and promote their customs. Where the local barista not only brews the perfect high altitude arabica coffee, but also concocts works of art in fabric, wood and wax. Feast on home cooked meals in restaurants where secret family recipes have not been diverged nor divulged from generation to generation. Ultimately, call one of these colonial houses, with incredible personalized service, home for the night.

Nature

One might say this country has it all: jungle, mountains, coastline and one of the most pristine archipelagos in the world – Galapagos. We have described Ecuador as colorful, where the vivid palette of nature can be appreciated in lush greenery, white foam waves, red-yellow sunsets, and blue footed boobies. Visit Ecuador any time of year and the climate is perfect, whatever your favorite season may be, since it is possible to experience all four seasons within one day!

Specific microclimates and ecosystems throughout 26 distinguished habitat types contribute to the county’s classification as one of the 17 megadiverse countries of the world. Furthermore, as a small country, Ecuador is special because nowhere else in the world can you be treated to such magical diversity in nature without having to travel long distances. Everyday new and different natural wonders await to take your breath away.

Volcanoes

Stepping out of the airport in Quito, the second highest capital city in the world, one is greeted by crisp, clean Andean air, bright, radiating sunlight, and surprised by the snow capped peak of the most famous volcano of Ecuador, Cotopaxi. The world’s highest continuously active volcano is joined by 8 other volcanoes on what German explorer Alexander Von Humboldt dubbed “La Avenida de los Volcanes” or Avenue of Volcanoes. Which of these skyscrapers would you like to explore?! The point on Earth closest to the sun located atop Chimborazo? Cayambe – the only volcano on the planet that is crossed by the Equator? Antisana and Los Illinizas both boast dual summits with Los Illinizas recommended as a starting point for training. For the fearless, both active volcanoes Sangay and Tungurahua are constantly spitting fire and ash in the Sangay National Park. Or discover the natural land/lagoon wonders of Quilotoa and Altar with their craters of turquoise and yellow waters. The options are endless to elevate your experience escalating in Ecuador!

Galápagos

Recognized by UNESCO as the first natural property declared World Heritage in 1978, the archipelago of Galápagos is conformed by one National Park and two Marine Reserves that are inhabited by some of the most incredible wildlife in the world. The specific conditions of the islands have provided the best environment for unique species to evolve like nowhere else, this is why back in the 1800’s the biologist Charles Darwin felt so inspired and wrote his masterpiece «On the Origin of Species». Close your eyes and think about a penguin! Could you imagine this little fellow sunbathing on a black lava rock under the equatorial sunshine? Seeing species that can only be spotted on these islands such as the Galápagos penguin, Galápagos sea lions, colorful marine iguanas among others, sweeps you on a surreal adventure back in time, breaking all paradigms of common wildlife.

Beyond this dreamlike ecosystem, the Galápagos islands also hold some of the most resilient societies.  Four inhabited islands are home to the «galapagueños». Although human history in Galapagos is not very old, incredible stories spring from this magical environment – from pirates and whalers, the sugar cane «patrón», the mysterious Baroness, to penal colonies – the human history of Galapagos also has curious content, making the perfect recipe for this extraordinary endeavor.

With curiosity, we listen and are inspired to design a match between the right people, places and experiences creating the optimal circumstances to transform travelers into heroes through sustainable travel and magical unforgettable memories.
