Sani Lodge

Where Conservation Becomes Part of the Journey

Sani Lodge sits within the Yasuní Biosphere Reserve, surrounded by primary Amazonian forest managed by the Sani Isla Kichwa community. The community has committed to protecting 31,178 hectares of land, making conservation an essential part of the lodge’s purpose rather than simply an activity offered to visitors.

The scale of biodiversity is equally remarkable. Sani Lodge reports 2,274 species recorded in its surrounding forest, while its birding programs work with a list of 593 bird species, including a selection of 180 species that can be targeted during specialized four day tours. The forest also provides habitat for macaws, toucans, sloths, monkeys, caimans and hundreds of other species.

What makes Sani particularly distinctive is the role of the Kichwa community itself. More than 25 years ago, the community chose sustainable tourism as a way to protect its territory while sharing its culture and knowledge with visitors. Today, the lodge is made up of just 12 cabins, keeping the experience relatively small and closely connected to its surroundings.

That commitment also extends to the lodge’s operations. Solar panels provide around 70% of the energy required to run the property, while solar systems are used to heat water. Paths and new cabins incorporate recycled plastic wood, reducing the need for conventional materials.

A stay at Sani Lodge therefore offers something beyond wildlife observation. Walking through primary forest, navigating its waterways, watching birds from the canopy tower, or learning from Kichwa guides becomes a way of understanding the relationship between the community and the territory it has chosen to protect.
At Sani Lodge, conservation is not separate from the experience. It is the reason the experience exists.
