Between Waves and Islands

On Isabela, the ocean is part of everyday life. Along the coast of Puerto Villamil, surfing offers another way of experiencing the island, one shaped by movement, local knowledge and the sea itself.
For Junior and Emilie, surf is far more than an activity. Through Galápagos Bike & Surf, they connect visitors with the island through lessons, equipment and a local understanding of its waters. The project has grown over time to include surf lessons, board rentals, bicycles and other water activities.

Learning to Read the Ocean
Surf lessons begin before entering the water. On the beach, participants learn the basic technique, warm up and start to understand how waves behave before putting it all into practice. At El Faro, a sandy beach break a short ride from town, conditions are well suited to learning, and local instructors adapt each session to the sea and to the surfer’s level.
The experience also reflects the value of local knowledge. Swell direction, tides, wind and the shape of the coastline all influence where and when to surf. Rather than chasing waves, surfers learn to observe the ocean and respond to it.

A Local Perspective
Junior and Emilie’s approach adds a personal dimension to the experience. A lesson here is also time spent with people who know the island and its beaches. Sessions typically include equipment, transportation to the surf spot, technical instruction and time in the water. Many first-time surfers manage to stand during their first lesson, though progress naturally depends on conditions and experience.
Alongside cycling, paddleboarding and snorkeling, surfing connects visitors with Isabela beyond its traditional wildlife experiences.

More Than a Surf Lesson
In Galápagos, community-based tourism often lives in simple encounters. A board, a beach and a local instructor can become a way of understanding the island from another perspective.
Sometimes, the best way to experience Isabela is to meet it at its own rhythm, one wave at a time.
